The new series of work by stained glass artist Rachel Mulligan was inspired by the old fortune-telling rhyme Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man or thief?

During Lockdown Rachel was reminded of two sketches she had made almost 20 years ago of stained glass panels illustrating Tailor and Soldier. She posted the sketches on Instagram and discovered they were made in the 1930s by Charles Paine and Daisy Luther and that panels illustrating Tinker and Sailor also existed. While sketching them Rachel began thinking about how the theme could be retold with a contemporary twist to reflect the tremendous effort of the community during the Covid crisis. From the building of the Nightingale hospitals to the cleaners in care homes, and from Thursday night clapping to supporting those people who suddenly had no income, the eight panels reflect daily life in 2020.

Rachel is inspired by Medieval art and storytelling. Her work is usually very detailed but in these panels she was emulating the pared back, graphic style of the 1930’s originals. During the summer she travelled to Lamberts in Germany so she could select the right mouth-blown glass for the project. The glass has been engraved, painted and stained. Having finished work on the stained glass Rachel then revisited her printmaking past and turned the designs into a series of linocuts, the first she has made in 25 years. Rachel is delighted to be showcasing the new work at the Stained Glass Museum in Ely. It is an inspiring place to visit with so many beautiful and historic panels housed in a stunning location.

Welsh Saints in Stained Glass - Online lecture (webinar)
3 Mar. 2021 7pm

Event category: Talk /Tour

Price: £5.00 + 95p eventbrite booking fee (Friends: £4.00 + 95p eventbrite booking fee)
Location: Online
Welsh saints are embedded in the landscape of Wales in its place-names and the churches dedicated to them. From the 1880s, an increasing number of native saints were depicted in the stained glass of these churches as expressions of local, regional and national identity. This talk will outline the changing representations of Welsh saints in stained glass from the nineteenth century and into the twenty-first, with a particular focus on St David, whose feast day falls on 1 March. The study of the representation of a single saint provides an opportunity to compare the approaches and styles of a wide variety of artists and studios and has revealed some curious discoveries regarding consistencies in design and the reuse of cartoons.

How to identify the makers of 19th Century Stained Glass Windows - online talk (webinar)
10 Mar. 2021 7pm

Event category: Talk /Tour

Price: £5.00 + 95p eventbrite booking fee (Friends: £4.00 + 95p eventbrite booking fee)
Location: Online
A hinderance in studying 19th century-stained glass is that many panels are not signed by their makers. The preponderance of windows in the gothic revival style can make it difficult to discern one maker from another. In this talk Chris Parkinson will share tips on how to identify windows by some of the largest 19th century stained glass manufacturers, such as the London-based firms Clayton & Bell, Lavers & Barraud and Heaton, Butler & Bayne.

Chris Parkinson is a retired secondary school teacher residing in and actively promoting the stained glass of Essex. During the last decade, Chris carried out a photographic survey of the surviving pre-Reformation stained glass in Essex for the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (CVMA), images of which are available on the CVMA website. Chris is currently preparing a CVMA publication cataloguing the stained glass in Essex up to 1800 with co-author Dr Penny Hebgin-Barnes. While such glass remains the focus of his current activities, Chris retains an interest in and love of 19th century glass which stretches back some 45 years.
