IMPACT OF COVID-19

How you can support us during these uncertain times

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic The Stained Glass Museum was closed to visitors for almost five months between March and August 2020. A number of museum events and workshops were also cancelled in the spring and summer period. We estimate that we will have lost around £100,000 in income this year.

Since we rely on the income we make from admissions, events, workshops, and shop sales to care for our collection and pay our staff, it has been an extremely challenging time for us. Even though we are now reopen, we are having to limit visitor numbers and cannot expect to generate the typical levels of income from ticket sales.

There are several ways you can support us from a distance during these challenging times, by making an online donation or purchase.

LOOKING AHEAD

An update from The Stained Glass Museum as the UK slowly emerges from lockdown

Full Statement - 15 June 2020

"No doubt there are challenging times ahead, but we remain cautiously optimistic about a phased reopening, and continue to think creatively about ensuring our collections are available to all."

Emergency Grant Funding secured

We are delighted to report that The Stained Glass Museum has been awarded emergency grant funding from Arts Council England, The Headley Trust, National Lottery Heritage Fund, East Cambridgeshire District Council, and Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire Family History Society towards essential running costs and adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are most grateful to these organisations and also all the individual donors who have collectively contributed more than £3,000 in donations over the last couple of months to help cover our essential running costs during this time.

Preparing to reopen the museum

We are now beginning to make preparations and plans to reopen the museum sometime in late summer. Of course the precise timing and manner of reopening will depend on safety measures in place and public confidence in visiting attractions. The museum’s priority will always be the health and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers, workshop tutors and of course, our visitors.

All our scheduled activities and workshops have been cancelled up to the end of August and those affected have been contacted. We remain hopeful that our workshops programme will resume in autumn, with additional safety measures and social distancing in place.

No doubt there are challenging times ahead, but we remain cautiously optimistic about reopening, and continue to think creatively about making our collections available. To that end, we are working hard on our new website, which has been under development for some months, and which we expect to launch imminently!

Online events

In the meantime, we are pleased to announce our first ever webinar with Helen Whittaker on Wednesday 15 July 2020, 7pm (more info below).

We also continue to share our collection online through our website and social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). Please keep in touch on our social media, read and share our posts. Where possible, we will be sharing education resources and ideas for those now educating their children from home.

Support us from a distance

While we are closed, there are several ways you can support us from a distance:

Make a donation to general funds, or our ongoing Glass racks Appeal
Encourage a friend to Join our Friends Organisation
Make a purchase from our online shop

We look forward to welcoming our visitors back to the Museum as soon as we can. Thank you for your continued support.

CLOSURE STATEMENT

The Stained Glass Museum and Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Full Statement - 19 March 2020

The Stained Glass Museum is now temporarily closed to the public until further notice. Whilst this is a difficult decision faced by so many organisations at the moment, in response to the fast moving and changeable nature of the COVID-19 outbreak, the museum’s priority will always be the health and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers, workshop tutors and of course, our visitors.

Some of our planned activities, workshops and events have already been cancelled and those affected have been contacted. Please keep an eye on our website and social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) for further advice on our future events as and when decisions are made.

As an independent museum and charity with no regular major sources of grant funding, the present situation is very challenging for us financially. We rely on the income we make from admissions, events, workshops, and shop sales to care for our collection and pay our staff. If you have booked for an event or workshop, we would ask you to consider using it for a rescheduled event, or donating it to the museum instead. There are several ways you can support us from a distance, by making an online donation or purchase.

During this temporary closure, we will continue to share our collection online through our website and social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) . We encourage you to read and share our posts! Where possible, we will be sharing education resources and ideas for those now educating their children from home.

At this time of uncertainty for all, we ask you to remain sensible, look after one another, follow the guidance from your local health organisation, and support local businesses and charities where possible.

We look forward to welcoming our visitors back to the Museum as soon as we can. Thank you for your continued support.
