About Copper Foiling Workshops
The copper foiling technique, developed in the Tiffany Studios in the 1890s is ideal for decorative panels, sun catchers and mirror work as well as lampshades and other 3D work. Copper tape and solder are used to create a seam joining the pieces of glass.
This practical and informative workshop is a perfect introduction to stained glass work for beginners or those wishing to refresh their knowledge. You will learn the traditional skills of glass cutting and shaping to a pattern, copper foiling and soldering in a relaxed environment with plenty of individual attention. You will be shown how to make and fix appropriate wire hooks and finally the best method for cleaning your piece ready for display.
At the end of the day you will have a unique piece to take home with you, as well as an understanding of the techniques and tools involved if you decide to move on to projects of your own.
The workshop will have a maximum of ten students, allowing for ample individual as well as group tuition from both our tutors.
Lunch: There may be up to an hour’s break for lunch. Lunch is not provided, but there are many nearby cafes and sandwich shops or you can bring a packed lunch.
What to bring: You may like to wear old clothes or overalls.

Meet the Tutors
David and Gillian opened the Strawberry Glass Studio in 2008, having first learned stained glass work in the 1970s.The Studio is situated in an arts and crafts centre two miles from the centre of Spalding in South Lincolnshire. Here they design and create their own glass art as well as teaching stained glass work, both lead work and copper foiling construction.
David and Gillian are particularly committed to providing those interested in the heritage crafts with the opportunity to experience for themselves the skills involved in stained glass work and teach at a number of venues including the Stained Glass Museum. Their workshops are practical and informative with a relaxed style and plenty of one-to-one tuition.
