Access to The Stained Glass Museum
The Museum is located on an upper level of the Grade-I listed medieval Ely Cathedral. The entrance to the museum is via a spiral stone staircase of 40 steps from the south-west transept of Ely Cathedral. The stairs are fitted with a handrail. Unfortunately there is no lift access to the Museum.
For those unable to visit the museum there is a virtual tour available from the Cathedral main desk on the ground floor.
At the top of the stairs there is a chair for those who need to rest their legs. There are also lightweight portable chairs in the museum gallery which can be moved around so you can enjoy looking whilst also sitting down.
The Stained Glass Museum gives free entry to companions or carers of disabled visitors.
We have an induction loop available at our admission desk/shop. Please indicate to a member of staff that you would like to use the hearing loop, and set your hearing aid to the 'T' setting.
Please note that there are no toilet facilities within the museum itself. However, visitors can use the accessible toilet facilities on the ground floor of Ely Cathedral in the Processional Way.
If you need additional help going up the stairs or using our facilities, please contact the museum prior to your visit to arrange for assistance. The museum staff are always happy to support our visitors in any way that they can.
For further information about access, or to discuss your particular access requirements, please contact the Museum on 01353 660347 or e-mail us at email@example.com in advance of your visit.
Our Access Policy
We are committed to improving access to The Stained Glass Museum in the longer term so that our collections are more widely available to all. Recent work undertaken during a 2-year Resilient Heritage Project 'Windows onto the future: investigating options for a more accessible and resilient Stained Glass Museum', funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund focused on ways in which we can fulfil our future vision to be an ‘accessible visitor attraction’.
